According to federal tax records obtained by national pro-life groups, affiliates of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer foundation gave more than half a million dollars in 2010 to Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest promoter and performer of abortion.  These contributions were given despite increasing scientific evidence that abortion is a “known risk factor” for breast cancer, including a study from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle which reported a “20 to 50 percent increased chance for breast cancer among women who had had an abortion compared to women who carried their pregnancies to term.”

Researchers offer the following explanation as a possible means of documenting a link between abortion and increased risk for breast cancer:

In early pregnancy, levels of estrogen increase, leading to breast growth in preparation for lactation. If this process is interrupted by an abortion-before full maturity in the third trimester-then more relatively vulnerable immature cells could be left than there were prior to the pregnancy, resulting in a greater potential risk of breast cancer over time.
